When I think of Christmas the first word that comes to mind other than family is "tradition". In my family it was tradition for us to spend Christmas at home around the tree opening presents, laughing, sharing stories and everyone sharing what they're most grateful for.

I’ve always loved our tradition but a few years ago, felt we could shake things up just a tad. So, I presented my family with the idea of traveling during the Christmas holiday instead of rejoicing at home as we have done for the last 30 years. Well, to my surprise every one of my family members were open and excited to create new memorable experiences. After some research and consultation we came to a unanimous decision that we'd be spending Christmas of 2013 at the Biltmore Estates.

Fast forward to four days before the Christmas holiday as we rode up the mountain heading to the Biltmore everyone was in awe; it was a sight to see. The way the snow hugged every crevice of the mountain and the air was light and crisp. Christmas was definitely in the air as we sang, played word games and laughed all the way there. As we approached the grounds of the Estate it was absolutely magical. No detail was overlooked in creating this winter Wonderland vision. There were thousands of lights and too many extravagant outdoor decorations to count. I'd never seen anything so beautiful in my entire life. We experienced a self - guided audio tour of Biltmore House, enjoyed wine tasting at the Winery, dined from special menus inspired by field-to-table dining at the estate restaurants and shopped at several of the perfectly embellished souvenir shops. We stayed for 3 nights at the Inn on the Biltmore Estates. It was one of the most phenomenal places I've ever visited and perfectly synonymous with the holiday: Christmas.

We checked out the Biltmore Christmas morning and made it home in time to sit around the tree to open presents, share stories, laugh and share what we were all grateful for. So, if you have any reservations about going on vacation or traveling during the holidays please don't you will come to realize that you aren't “getting away” from your traditions but in fact only adding to them?
